Mi Tierra played to a sold out house last night at the Basement. They did two great sets and kept everyone guarachando from start to finish - their version of Salsa Mayor's Esto está is a lot of fun. There was hardly any room to dance and the aircon didn't seem to be up to the task, but it was a great night for timba. Thanks guys! They'll be back in town at the end of September for Fiesta in Darling Harbour.
Last weekend was another great night at Casa de la Salsa's One Night in Cuba (there are pics here). Even better news is that there will be another one in two weeks, on September 7, then after that it will be held on the first Friday of every month. Thank god the timba drought in Sydney has finally ended! Please everyone, keep coming to this night so it can keep happening! We don't want to go back to the bad (not very) old days when we were lucky to have a timba event once every three months.
FiestaDarling Harbour's Fiesta, September 28-October 1, is shaping up to be especially good this year: Mi Tierra will play on the Saturday, September 29. After I wrote about Osvaldo Chacón coming to Sydney with Son Veneno (above, with Chacón), Steve Marin, who plays with the band, wrote to me with their Sydney tour dates. They play Sunday, September 30 at Fiesta, as well as these other gigs:
October 5, Casa De La Salsa, Watershed
October 6, Cuban Festival, Club Marconi
October 13, Cuban Festival, Club Marconi
October 14, The Basement Sydney (farewell show)
Also at Club Marconi's Cuban Festival, which is a long way to go for city dwellers, but is worth the trip, will be the fabulous Yarima, a Cuban dancer now resident here who never fails to charm with her sassy moves and winning smile. Check out her new web site.
